Time Capsule iSkate Succes

Posted: Tuesday 25 April 2017

Success at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 for iSkate club members.

The Time Capsule inclusive skating club was established in 2013.  It was formed it to try and give families of disabled people an activity that they could all participate in together. Participants include kids and adults with all different disabilities using the ice every Sunday night with a member base of around 80 members currently.

Some use it as a fun session but a few started taking figure skating lessons with our coaches and through hard work and dedication from the athletes and the coaches they are now competing annually. They compete in the Braehead inclusive skating event every year and have also travelled to Iceland for the Special Olympics National Championship.

The Inclusive Skating competition system allows skaters with any form of impairment to compete fairly against each other through an impairment compensation that is added to the skating score.

They have done so well at these events that 4 of our skaters qualified to represent the Team GB squad at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 in Austria, the only skaters in Scotland to make the squad.

The athletes are Courtney Montgomery, Heather McNeil, Jonathan McSalley and Graeme Watson.

Courtney and Heather achieved 1st place each bringing home a gold medal, Jonathan was 6th  Place and Graeme came in 5th place. This was an amazing achievement and exceeded all expectations.

clubsportnl supported the trip to Austria via the ISAGAS Grant Process for the competing athletes.

Well done to all the athletes who competed.
